by Lindsay Lawson
lindsay.lawson@artschoolreview.com Art School Review Staff Writer Do you cringe in horror and at the question, "But what will you DO with an art history degree?" If so, you are not alone, my art-loving friend. Those words can strike fear into the heart of any art history student. Having earned a bachelor's degree in art history myself, I can sympathize and would like to offer you some suggestions for a career in art. If you studied art history in college and want to put that art degree to use, here are some of the careers in art that you may want to consider. Museum CuratorThe curator of a museum is responsible for the permanent art collection, museum affairs, and exhibitions. They are in charge of purchasing or loaning pieces, planning exhibitions, and managing resources. The role of curator also involves some promotional and fundraising efforts.Art Exhibit InstallationInstallation is a more "hands-on" art career that you can pursue with an art degree. Once the curator selects the pieces for exhibition, the installation manager hangs the paintings, displays the sculptures, and lights and labels each piece.Art Gallery SalesYour art history degree could also lead you to a career in art sales. These days you will find many art galleries selling an array of paintings, photography, and sculpture. You would be selling artwork to decorators, home owners, tourists, and collectors on a commission basis.RestorationFor the extremely detail oriented art historian, there is the field of art restoration. Restoration is a meticulous scientific process of repairing damaged or aging artwork. The intent is to restore the artwork to its original state, and prolong its life so it can be enjoyed for years to come. These are just few of the many interesting careers in art that you could have. So now you will have at least four answers prepared next time you are interrogated about the viability of your art history degree.
